Quick Tips For Your icListen Smart Hydrophone

 

As a user of the icListen Smart Hydrophone Ocean Sonics has some tips you should consider when using and storing your instrument. We have developed these tips for our users to help extend the life of their hydrophone so they can continue to collect precise measurements of underwater sounds.

1.  Carefully handle your hydrophone to prevent damage to the acoustic sensor.

The element located at the top of the icListen Smart Hydrophone is the acoustic sensor which is coated with thin layers of metal and polymers that can be damaged if handled improperly. Although the sensor is pretty tough it still should be treated with care because it is possible to damage the sensor, which may lead to a decrease in both instrument performance and precise measurements.

 

2. Use only the Ocean Sonics supplied yellow pelican case to store your hydrophone. 

The engineers and design team at Ocean Sonics spent quality time researching and developing the yellow pelican carrying case and cut-out foam inserts specifically for icListen Smart Hydrophones. The design was carefully thought out so that the hydrophone sensor was protected from any accidental contact while in storage and to minimize the risk of mishandling or dropping the hydrophone.

 

3. You should always rinse your instrument after every use.

Rinse your icListen Smart Hydrophone with cool clean water to rinse off any residue particles, calcium deposits, or liquids that may be stuck to your hydrophone.

 

4. When deploying your hydrophone you want to avoid creating bubbles. 

To avoid creating bubbles when putting your instrument in the water, Ocean Sonics recommends using ordinary dish soap with no micro-beads. Using a higher quality soap with scents and creams will increase the risk of damage to the hydrophone.

 

5. Ocean Sonics icListen Smart Hydrophone Sensitivity

All icListen Smart Hydrophones are pre-calibrated by our engineers at the office in Nova Scotia before shipment. Each hydrophone comes with a calibration certificate indicating the date when it was tested, and the outcome of the calibration test.  Ocean Sonics recommends recalibrating your instrument every 24 months to guarantee the instrument is still collecting precise measurements of underwater sounds.
