Shipping Noise

When used for environmental monitoring, hydrophones are employed to learn about the local environment and improve understanding of how underwater sound effects cetacean activity and the marine environment as a whole. Hydrophones serve as an educational tool for researchers, scientists, and students to help build awareness and understanding of the sensitivity of the marine environment and the impacts of commercial shipping. Monitoring of marine acoustic disturbances, changes in ambient ocean noise, and the potential effects of acoustic masking with regards to cetaceans and the marine environment, will help us better understand and accurately assess the effects of shipping noise.
